Cheryl Bruce
Hi, I'm Cheryl — a multi-disciplinary creative based on the Central Coast of NSW, working across watercolour painting and surface design. I'm drawn to landscapes, seascapes and still life, and I love finding the drama in the shadows rather than just chasing the light. Alongside painting, I design patterns for fabric and homewares, and I teach watercolour classes, workshops and retreats around Australia and beyond.
About Cheryl Bruce
Cheryl Bruce is an Australian artist, watercolour tutor and surface designer based in Wamberal, on the Central Coast of New South Wales. As a multi-disciplinary creative, her work spans original paintings, surface pattern design for fabric and homewares, and teaching, drawing inspiration from the Central Coast landscape, the Australian bush, and her travels abroad.
Her paintings range across landscapes and streetscapes, seascapes, rivers and marine subjects, still life and floral work, and portraiture, alongside a series of watercolour diaries painted while travelling through Europe. While many artists describe themselves as painters of light, Cheryl is drawn to the shadows — finding the shifting, glowing colour within a painting's dark passages just as compelling as its highlights, and using that contrast to bring drama to her work.
She exhibits regularly on the Central Coast and beyond, including as a member of the Art Hall Group and as a exhibiting artist at Deepwater Art Space. Her work has been recognised with awards including First prizes in the watercolour section several times in the Drummoyne and Newcastle Art Prizes, and recently her work was recognised including the Member for Bradfield Award and a Highly Commended in printmaking at the Kuring-gai Art Society's Annual Awards Exhibition, and 2nd Prize in the Watercolour Section along with the Packers Prize at the Singleton Art Prize. She has also held an artist residency at Mount Wilson.
Beyond her painting practice, Cheryl designs surface patterns — florals, geometrics and abstracts, conversational and animal motifs, and placement illustrations — which appear on fabric, homewares and other products.
Cheryl teaches regularly, from local watercolour classes on the Central Coast to workshops and retreats further afield, including The Enclave, a floral-focused watercolour retreat in Winnaleah, Tasmania, and a retreat on Lord Howe Island. She also tutors painting holidays through Painting Holiday Tours, including a Central West NSW retreat through Orange, Millthorpe and Carcoar.
