About Chan Dissanayake
Chan Dissanayake is a multi-award-winning watercolour artist based in Canberra, Australia, and one of Australia's highly regarded watercolour tutors.
His passion for watercolour has developed into a distinctive approach characterised by spontaneity, confident brushwork and expressive interpretation. Working across a diverse range of subjects—from rural landscapes and urban streetscapes to coastal scenes—Chan seeks to capture the atmosphere and essential character of a subject rather than reproduce every detail.
In 2017, Chan was elected to the Australian Watercolour Institute, a significant recognition of his contribution to Australian watercolour painting. He has built an extensive reputation as an educator through his innovative teaching approach and willingness to share his knowledge with students.
Chan conducts workshops throughout Australia and leads international painting tours, helping artists develop their understanding of composition, simplification, tonal values and the unique qualities of watercolour. He has also contributed articles to Australian art publications including Australian Artist and Artists Palette.
His teaching philosophy encourages students to interpret a subject in their own way rather than simply copy a demonstration. This makes his workshops particularly suited to Painting Holiday Tours, where participants have the opportunity to paint directly from inspiring landscapes and develop a more confident, personal approach to watercolour.
